Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope this newsletter finds all well. With only a week before the half term break which starts on Friday 26th May, there is still much to do in school and a variety of activities going on!
Playground at drop off and collection time
I would respectfully ask all parents and carers to ensure children remain in the upper playground area and refrain from using any of the playground equipment. This is in an attempt to ensure all remain safe and well.
Athletics Club
I reminder to all parents with pupils in Chestnut and Oak classes – due to being over subscribed at the beginning of term, we took the decision to ask parents to ‘re-apply’ for slots at Athletics Club for the week commencing 5th June. This will allow the opportunity for those who didn’t enjoy the Club for the first half of term the chance to experience it, while others may feel that 5 weeks experience is enough for them!
Please email or contact Mrs Pike if your child is interested in joining this Club.
Maths Day
A reminder that Maths Day will be on Tuesday 23rd May. Children are invited to dress up as something linked to Maths, this may be a number or shape e.g. 6 dots or triangle on a t-shirt. We will be welcoming Marcus Tettmar, one of the creators of Nerdle to work with our key stage 2 pupils, as well as a ‘Mathemagician’ who we hope will inspire all! Please would children in Beech and Hazel class bring one carrot into school with them on 23rd May, and please would children in Chestnut and Oak bring one potato – all needed for some vegetable Olympics!
Year 6 Tuck Shop
Year 6 pupils will be running their tuck shop on Friday afternoon after school again, selling 50p bags of sweets in order to raise funds for their Year 6 end of year party. If you are intending to make a purchase it would be helpful if you could bring the correct change!
If your child is on the bus and you give permission for them to purchase a bag of sweets, we can arrange this. Money can be handed to Mrs Pike on arrival at school on a Friday morning for safe keeping.
Raffle
The Whitfield family will be running a raffle at the Stour Row Open Gardens 27th/28th May. All proceeds will be going towards PTFA funds. There are some great prizes so if you would like to buy any tickets please speak to Rebecca Whitfield or Mrs Pike. Or you can come along next weekend and enjoy the gardens and some tea and cake!
Lunch time helper & handy person
We are still looking for a lunchtime helper to support staff with the distribution of lunches, filling the dishwasher and tidying the hall afterwards. This is a paid position, with daily hours of 11.30 – 1pm.
We are also needing a ‘handy person’ for 4 hours per week. This again is a paid position with flexible hours of working. If you are interested in either position and would like further information, please contact Mrs Pike or myself.
Class News
Oak Class
This week has been a wonderful chance to catch up with some art work. Year 5 and 6 pupils are studying the Ancient Greek artist Phidias, who was an Athenian. They then designed their own Zeus… hopefully to be created in clay. The children discovered there are five main types of decorative column, and evaluated their favourites. Pupils also enjoyed some food from the Americas.
Next week, Oak class will be exploring the Greek legacy in history.
Beech Class
This week Year 2 pupils have sat their Key Stage One SATs. All the children involved have applied themselves and tried their best. In Geography the children are comparing the capital cities of Nairobi and London.
In the Maths, the children are coming to the end of their work on fractions, so they are all now fraction fanatics!
Next week there are extra-curricular learning opportunities including the Maths Day on Tuesday and a Kenya Day on Thursday.
Hazel Class
This week work has been derived from the story of ‘The Naughty Bus’, with pupils looking and recognising different vehicles and writing sentences linked to how each mode transport is used and/or help us. The children have been introduced to still life art and have made their own drawing studies of flowers. In Maths the focus has been repeated patterns and the children have loved identifying, making and then identifying patters seen around the school.
Next week the children will explore the concept of line and pressure in art and in Literacy a class book is hoped to be created with each child writing a page linked to the adventures of a naughty bus!
