Newsletter 22nd November 2024
November 25, 2024 Sandy Pike

Dear Parents and Carers,

I believe we have been fortunate to have missed the harshest of the weather this week, however with our climate ever changing I thought it would be prudent to explain the procedure should we experience heavy snow or flooding. Should the school have to temporary close due to inaccessibility or risk of injury.

Parents and carers will be sent a parent mail informing them of any temporary closure. Parents, carers and the wider community will also be able to see any closure by using the Dorset link service which outlines schools’ correct status:

https://gi.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/closedservices/Service/schools

The school will reopen as soon as possible following a temporary closure.

NOTICES

A polite request regarding pupil fitness

I would respectfully request that parents consider carefully how they communicate ‘child fitness’ to adults, particularly when talking with a child present.  If a child has heard their parent say – “If they aren’t right, then give me a call and I will collect”, a child will generally say they feel unwell and want to be collected! It would be really helpful, if you are concerned, that you drop us a quick email on office@stowerprovost.dorset.sch.uk, or talk to an adult once your child has entered school. I understand and appreciate there is an ongoing balancing act with pupil well-being, illness, school attendance and parental work commitments.

Children in Need – 15th November

Thank you for supporting Children in Need.  A total of £75.10 was raised by one and all. Thank you

THIS WEEK

SCARF Workshops

SCARF is an acronym for: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship

SCARF is a whole-school approach to develop children’s health & wellbeing through PSHE, which aims to empower pupils with essential life skills, from emotional well-being and social skills to health education.

Children experienced a SCARF workshop on Wednesday. Workshops focused on their school day, with a view to further promoting a positive school culture and preparing pupils for future challenges.

Lego Club

For our Lego Challenge this week, the children had to build an alien. Monday’s winner was Hugo who created an adult alien, three child aliens, one baby alien and an astronaut.

We had joint winners at Thursday, with Lily-Mae’s alien creation with a row of 7 eyes at the top to see over things and eyes in the middle, and Cameron’s alien statue with a gold plate on the base to tell you when it was built. (Miss Buxton)

Easy Fundraising

With Christmas around the corner it is an ideal time to download the Easy Fundraising app on your phone, and raise funds for the school without having to do anything, other than going through the app to make online purchases.

Remember businesses can use our Easy Fundraiser page too. Larger items like insurance and travel can also be purchased through the Easy Fundraiser page.

You can raise even more money by asking others to join the merry throng –  use the QR code!

How it works: easyfundraising partners have over 7,000 brands who will donate part of what you spend to a cause of your choice. It won’t cost you any extra. The cost is covered by the brand.

So why not get organised and make those Christmas purchases online through the Easy Fundraising app!

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Red Dress and Sambhali Sutra

The Red Dress is a 14-year, award winning global, collaborative embroidery project. Conceived by British artist Kirstie Macleod, the garment provides an artistic platform for individuals around the world (predominantly women) many of whom are vulnerable and live in poverty, to tell their personal stories through embroidery.

As part of the Red Dress’s ongoing world tour, the garment will be on display with panels from Sambhali in The Barn at Hawkers Farm, Dorset, November 29th – December 5th 2024

The exhibition will also see the display of a series of large, brightly coloured s9tched panels created by vulnerable women supported by the Sambhali Trust in Rajasthan, India. The women each produced a work telling their story and what it is to be a woman in India.

Please see flyer for additional information.

CLASS OVERVIEWS

Oak Class

This week, we have immersed in our persuasive speech independent write. We have been using lots of poetic devices to make our speeches more effective. In maths, we have been re-visiting square and cube numbers, and noting that 1 and 64 and both square and cube numbers at the same time! We also used some of our mastery statements to help us – namely ‘I know this….because …..’ and ‘This didn’t work, so I am going to try ….’ ! In science, we investigated the effects of alcohol on our bodies, discovering that some of them can be really bad for our health. In RE, we discussed Bandi Chhor Divas and  we found out that it is a Sikh celebration commemorating the day when the sixth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Hargobind, and 52 Hindu kings were released from Gwalior Fort, who had been imprisoned by Mughal Emperor Jahangir. We also had a fab visit from our new PSHE curriculum team and discussed mental health and well-being.

Chestnut Class

In Chestnut class we are coming to the end of the History topic. We discussed about how king Edward’s death brought uncertainty to the country. We followed the main successors to the throne and their battles until William of Norway was crowned. In Geography we focused on the cardinal points and used this knowledge to plot coordinates.

In Maths, Year 4 we focused on finding out the area of a shape. We have now started multiplications. Timetable Rockstars is a great app to help with fluency and accuracy. In Year 3, we continue to work out additions and subtractions, focusing on using the inverse operation in order to check our accuracy.

Beech Class

This week in Beech Class, the children have been writing paragraphs about badgers and using some great adjectives. In Maths, the children have been looking at shape – they have been identifying differences between 2D and 3D shapes as well as learning about sides, faces and vertices. During the afternoons, Beech Class have been focusing on their Nativity practice. We have also thoroughly enjoyed our SCARF workshop about emotions, where the children were shown different strategies to support them when they have different feelings.  (Mrs Whelan)

Hazel Class

It has been an exciting week in Hazel Class this week, firstly with the chilly beginning of the week and all the ice crystals we found with lots of different shapes and things frozen inside, and then the snow on Thursday was very exciting, lots of snowmen were built. The children have built bridges for the troll to live under as part of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have played the floor is water and built a pathway over our imaginary river. The children have listened to alternative versions of stories such as The Three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig. In maths the children have been investigating four sided shapes and the differences between a rectangle and a square, and where we can find the different shapes around the school. In phonics the children are recapping all the sounds they have learnt and are using them to write CVC words. (Miss Buxton)
