Dear Parents and Carers,
It may be the week before half term, however we haven’t taken our foot off the pedal! There has been a flurry of activity this week from Maths Days to Discos. Read on to find out more.
Maths Day
What fun was had on Tuesday during our Maths Day. Children were invited to dress up as something linked to Maths, and boy wasn’t there a variety of outfits! Marcus Tettmar, one of the creators of Nerdle joined us and worked with our key stage 2 pupils, while a ‘Mathemagician’ wowed all!
Other activities during the day included Vegetable Olympics and a phone number challenge where children represented the digits in the school telephone number in a variety of creative ways.

Reminder regarding Athletics Club
A reminder to all parents with pupils in Chestnut and Oak classes – due to being over subscribed at the beginning of term, we took the decision to ask parents to ‘re-apply’ for slots at Athletics Club for the week commencing 5th June. This will allow the opportunity for those who didn’t enjoy the Club for the first half of term the chance to experience it, while others may feel that 5 weeks experience is enough for them!

Raffle
The Whitfield family will be running a raffle at the Stour Row Open Gardens 27th/28th May. All proceeds will be going towards PTFA funds. There are some great prizes so if you would like to buy any tickets please speak to Rebecca Whitfield or Mrs Pike. Or you can come along next weekend and enjoy the gardens and some tea and cake!
PTFA Jumble Sale – 17th June 10 – 12 noon
It’s time for a ‘summer clean’ and bring any sellable wear and donations to school for the PTFA jumble sale! Donations of any clothing, toys, household and garden items would be welcome, but NO electrical goods please.
If you are keen and willing to offer a hand on Friday 16th June after school to help set up, your assistance would be welcomed. Equally, if you are willing to help behind tables on the day, please contact a member of the PTFA or myself.
We are still looking for : A Lunch time helper & a handy person
Lunchtime helper – supporting staff with the distribution of lunches, filling the dishwasher and tidying the hall afterwards. Not overly glamorous I know but we do have fun! This is a paid position, with daily hours of 11.30 – 1pm, so why not be paid to have a bit of fun!
We are also seeking a ‘handy person’ for 4 hours per week. This again is a paid position with flexibility as to when you carry out the 4 hours. No tickets required, but practical skills ideal. Duties included weekly fire alarm and emergency lighting testing, along with carrying out odd jobs around the school as needed.

Class News
Oak Class
It is great to be accessing our full curriculum again – in year six, the children have been looking at BODMAS as well as beginning to look at algebra. Year 5 have been consolidating and extending their knowledge of multiplication and division in the context of reasoning and problem solving. In PSHE, we have been discussing the difference between mental health and well-being and working out what strategies work best for each of us to help ourselves and others. We have nearly completed our modern Zeus clay works whilst listening to the ‘Percy Jackson’ audio book. After the holiday, we are looking forward to watching our film ‘Percy Jackson’ as well as our Ancient Greek day – more on this later. (E.Clasby)
Chestnut Class
In English, the children have been writing their own chapter to explain how Max solves his friends’ problem.
Year 4’s have been working on solving money problems in Maths whilst the Year 3’s have been telling the time to the nearest minute.
Chestnut Class have created some lovely prints using foam tiles. They have written about a fond memory and will use the print as a background.
Beech Class
Beech Class had a fantastic time on maths day, where they particularly enjoyed the Mathemagician and seeing which carrot flew the furthest. On Thursday the class celebrated Kenya Day, the children looked amazing wearing the colours of the flag and pupils had a great time trying fruit from both Kenya and the UK.
After half term, the class topic will be Coastlines, within which the children will be developing their geographical skills.
Hazel Class
Children have written their own story based on the book of The Naughty Bus, this included creating a front cover with title, and writing a beginning, middle and end of the story. The children have worked incredibly hard on their own stories! The children thoroughly enjoyed the Mathemagician, the vegetable Olympics and other activities organised (thank you for the carrots). After half term, the class topic with be Fun at the Seaside, the children will be investigating pirates, beaches and the history of seaside holidays, and fossils and dinosaurs. Further information regarding a class trip to Charmouth will be sent out after half term.
