Oak class have been introduced to the sport of orienteering. Official markers were put up around the school grounds and, in pairs, the children had to read the map and collect the codes to win points.
With Year 6 having just finished SATS, it was a great way to decompress and do something together with Year 5. Some of the children commented, “It was like a race but with the extra challenge that we had to figure out where to go” and, “It was nice that we won points for collecting the codes, not just finishing first”.
Orienteering is a great family activity. There is a free-to-use permanent course in Gillingham and others across Dorset. Details can be found at https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/pocs
